Getting after the quarterback is one of the most valuable skills in football. Games are won and lost in the trenches, and these defenders are the ones who change everything with a single snap. Here’s a look at the top pass rushers in college football this season.
1. Rueben Bain Jr., Miami
Bain’s numbers may not jump off the page at first glance, but his pressure rate tells the real story. According to PFF, he ranks fourth in the nation with 39 pressures and holds a 94.7 overall grade, the best among all edge rushers in college football. He may not get Heisman attention, but he impacts every play.
2. Colin Simmons, Texas
Simmons was one of the best pass rushers in the country as a true freshman last season and has only improved. He’s tallied eight sacks in nine games this year, including seven pressures and a 91.3 pass-rush grade in a win over Vanderbilt. Explosive and clutch, he looks every bit like a future first-round NFL draft pick.
3. Dylan Stewart, South Carolina
If this list was based purely on physical traits, Stewart would be No. 1. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound sophomore is a freak athlete who recorded 51 pressures as a freshman, second most among returning players. This year, he’s added 3.5 sacks and eight quarterback hurries, doubling his production from a year ago.
4. David Bailey, Texas Tech
Bailey might be the most impressive edge rusher on film. He moves like a linebacker but bullies linemen like a power rusher. At 250 pounds, he leads the nation in sacks with 11.5. His transfer from Stanford to Texas Tech looks like one of the best career decisions of the year.
5. Cashius Howell, Texas A&M
Howell isn’t far behind Bailey with 10.5 sacks. While sack totals can be misleading, his 21.5% pressure rate is elite. Howell has recorded at least one sack in every game since SEC play began, proving his consistency and dominance.
6. Peter Woods, Clemson
Clemson’s struggles have not come from its defensive line. Woods has been dominant, especially against the run. His ability to beat double teams and control the line makes him one of the most valuable defenders in college football, even if his sack totals don’t stand out.
7. TJ Parker, Clemson
Last season, Parker was one of the nation’s most disruptive players with 11 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss. This year, his production is down (two sacks, six TFLs in nine games), but the ability remains. He’s still an NFL-level talent who can take over a game when he’s hot.
8. R. Mason Thomas, Oklahoma
Thomas might be the most intimidating edge rusher in the game. His motor never stops, and his explosive first step puts fear in every lineman he faces. His bend and burst make him a nightmare matchup and one of the hardest hitters in college football.
9. LT Overton, Alabama
Overton affects games in ways that don’t always show up in the box score. He’s an outstanding edge setter who forces plays inside and helps his linebackers make stops. His mix of discipline, strength, and football IQ makes him a key piece of Alabama’s defense.
10. Romello Height, Texas Tech
Height’s versatility sets him apart. He can line up on the edge or drop as an off-ball linebacker, and he thrives in both roles. PFF grades him as the fifth-best edge rusher in college football (92.2), with 37 pressures this season. His all-around play has helped Texas Tech develop one of the nation’s best run defenses.
