Dodgers Clear Favorites Again
All of the stars are back in 2026. Roki Sasaki should be back in the rotation. Shohei Ohtani will be able to pitch a full season. Kirby Yates and Michael Conforto hitting free agency should free up even more money for the Dodgers to add to a lineup that was quietly underwhelming in 2025.
The depth of the rotation was what really stood out for the Dodgers in the playoffs. Blake Snell, Ohtani, Tyler Glasnow, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto is a historically great quartet. Injuries feel like the biggest threat to their three-peat chances in 2026.
Jays’ Missed Chance
Toronto is out at +2000 to win the World Series at BetMGM. With Bo Bichette a free agent, George Springer in the second half of his 30s, and uncertainty over the rotation behind Trey Yesavage and Kevin Gausman, pessimism about Toronto’s credentials is understandable.
Still, it’s very rare a team has the third-shortest odds in their division after coming as close as Toronto did. Perhaps it was an everything-went-right kind of season at Rogers Centre. It’s unlikely that lineup is as dominant for a second year running, and the division projects to be far more competitive.
Yankees Have Holes To Fill
Paul Goldschmidt, Devin Williams, Luke Weaver, Trent Grisham, and Cody Bellinger are among the Yankees heading for free agency. Gerrit Cole won’t be available until May at the earliest. This rotation probably needs another veteran, even with Cam Schlittler’s high upside, and the lineup is lacking behind Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
New York’s odds are rarely reflective of its chances. Sportsbooks offer shorter prices due to the betting interest in the Yankees, and that’s particularly evident this offseason. There’s nothing about this roster which suggests it should be so far ahead of the rest of the American League’s contending teams.
Phillies & Astros’ Windows Closing?
Kyle Schwarber and Ranger Suárez are free agents for Philadelphia. Houston, after trading Kyle Tucker last winter, is set to let Framber Valdez walk in free agency.
The Astros have more to build around with Yordan Alvarez and Hunter Brown, but the playoff streak has come to an end, and this roster has plenty of flaws.
Philadelphia is relying on over-30s players extending their peaks and risks the rotation going from a strength to a weakness if Zack Wheeler can’t get back to his best after injury.
Seattle’s Key Free Agents
Only a few outs from the World Series, the Mariners are left to figure out how to get over the hump in 2026. Trade deadline acquisitions Eugenio Suárez and Josh Naylor are free agents.
Seattle can’t afford to let both players walk without meaningful replacements. Jorge Polanco and Mitch Garver are also free agents. The lineup was mediocre for much of the regular season, and it’s not reasonable to expect another historic campaign from Cal Raleigh.
Keeping the rotation intact should be the priority. This pitching staff is good enough to win a World Series if Jerry Dipoto lands a couple of bats.
Big-Market Threats
The Red Sox and Mets combined for one playoff win in 2025. New York fell apart down the stretch and missed the postseason. Boston, despite winning 89 games, was a fringe playoff team.
Both front offices will be aggressive this winter. The Red Sox need to resolve the Alex Bregman situation. Garrett Crochet needs a co-ace. New York has its own dilemma with Pete Alonso and needs to revamp the rotation after a calamitous second half.
The targets could be similar for these teams. Dylan Cease and Framber Valdez are fits in free agency, while they could get into a bidding war for Joe Ryan or Freddy Peralta on the trade market.
Chasing Pack
The Padres and Braves join the Blue Jays at +2000. They are closely followed by the Cubs and Brewers, who are set to battle it out for the NL Central once again, at +2200.
This is a diverse group of five with little to choose between them in the betting markets. Toronto just went to the World Series. Atlanta was a long way below .500. Milwaukee won 97 games, the Cubs won 92, and San Diego fell in the wild-card round to Chicago after falling short in the NL West.
Tucker is hitting the open market. Milwaukee is expected to shop Peralta. San Diego could lose Dylan Cease, Michael King, Robert Suarez, and Luis Arraez. It feels like Atlanta is the most stable of the quintet, but they were miles off a playoff spot in 2025.
Uncertainty is rife in this group. The Brewers won’t win 97 games again, Chicago’s offense could regress dramatically, and it’s unclear if San Diego is still in payroll-cutting mode.
Young Cores in Detroit & Baltimore
The Tigers and Orioles had contrasting seasons. Detroit ran away with the AL Central for most of the year, before settling for a wild-card spot and a Game 5 exit in the ALDS. Baltimore, after winning 192 games across 2023 and 2024, had a horrible start to the year and finished last in the AL East.
It might sound like these teams are a long way apart, but the reality is they are in a similar category. Rumors are rife the Tigers could trade away Tarik Skubal. Gleyber Torres and Jack Flaharty are set to be free agents.
The Orioles have one of the best young position-player cores in the big leagues. Their need for pitching is even more dire than it seemed at the beginning of the season, but it’s not like this team is beyond repair. Both teams have World Series-winning upside in 2026.
The Rest
These odds are bound to change dramatically throughout the offseason. Beyond the Orioles, the Giants, Rangers, Reds, Rays, and Diamondbacks could move to +3000 or shorter if they nail their winter moves.
Minnesota is likely to continue selling after its trade deadline tear down. Look for the Twins’ odds to lengthen considerably if Joe Ryan or Byron Buxton are dealt.
San Francisco’s bold decision to hire Tony Vitello is a storyline to keep an eye on, and don’t be surprised if Buster Posey swings for the fences in the offseason to build around Logan Webb, Matt Chapman, Rafael Devers, and Willy Adames.
Cincinnati’s rotation is a very strong starting point. Texas will look to make some fringe additions as the core of that roster is more than capable of a playoff run if Marcus Semien bounces back.
